Preliminary pages (‘prelims’)

Bibliographers refer to the first few pages of a book, those that come before the main text, as the ‘prelims’. Pages which come between the title page and the main text (that is, the contents page, foreword, etc.) are sometimes un-numbered, but could begin at number 1, continuing uninterrupted thereafter once the main text begins. A more classical - classy, I would say - way of doing this is to number every page between the title and the main text with lower-case Roman numerals: i, ii, iii, iv, v, and so on. Look at one or two books, old and new, to see exactly what each one does in this regard.
